A man by the name of Prospero Guadalupe Serna was charged with killing two of his young children and injuring another at a home in Lancaster, Los Angeles County.
The criminal complaint includes the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, along with allegations that he used a sharp object during the commission of the crime, personally inflicted great bodily injury on a child under five years old and that he has a prior conviction from 2017 for unlawfully causing a fire of a structure or forest land.
The dead children were identified as Serna’s 3-year-old daughter, Ziasia, and 7-year-old daughter, Najila. Serna allegedly attacked three of his children, killing two of them, Saturday while he was in the residence with his four children and their mother.
When deputies arrived, they discovered that the two children had been beaten and stabbed to death. Two other children, one of whom was injured, were found hiding in the residence. Deputies apprehended Serna a few blocks away. His face was bloodied and he could be heard shouting obscenities.
If convicted as charged, Serna will face a maximum sentence of life without the possibility of parole. The night that the department responded, video from the scene showed a physical struggle to detain Serna, requiring the effort of several deputies to pin him to the ground and place him in custody.
If convicted on the charges, Serna will face life in prison without parole.
