A former correctional officer at a Bay Area women’s prison, now notorious for an ongoing sexual abuse scandal, has been charged with sexually abusing three incarcerated women.

Darrell Wayne Smith, known around the prison as “Dirty Dick Smith, a one-time officer at Federal Correctional Institution Dublin has been charged with 12 felonies related to the alleged abuse of the incarcerated women. Smith was arrested in Florida, but his case is being transferred to the Bay Area, where the charges were filed.

Smith is the sixth current or former employee at the women’s federal prison charged with sexual abuse. Several more prison guards have been the subject of civil lawsuits alleging they also raped or sexually assaulted imprisoned women. Last year, the former warden, Ray J. Garcia, was convicted of sexually abusing inmates, showing them pictures of his penis, forcing them to pose nude for pictures, and lying about it to the FBI. A judge sentenced him in March to nearly six years in federal prison.

Others have taken plea deals, like Enrique Chavez, who was sentenced to 20 months, and Ross Klinger, who is awaiting sentencing in a case where he allegedly groomed an incarcerated woman with gifts and promises that they’d be romantic partners after she was freed. James Highhouse, a former guard and prison chaplain, was sentenced to seven years in prison for sexual abuse and lying to authorities.

Authorities say that sexual abuse in the prison was so widely known that many who lived and worked there referred to it as the “Rape Club.” Since the first criminal allegations surfaced, dozens more women have publicly come forward alleging they were sexually abused there, including by guards who have yet to face charges.
